Study Tasks for Final Exam


Study Tasks for EP004 Final Exam

The following study tasks will help you revisit important concepts – they are not exact questions from the exam

1. Revisit the tasks we did in our last lecture

How can you effectively carry out the first 3 steps of the research cycle?

Effective researching means carrying out effective searches.

Effective researching means evaluating your information effectively.

How to save time when carrying out database searches.


2.  Revisit or finish the table on the advantages and disadvantages of the sources (web, summon, databases etc) – you constructed the table on our wikispace. www.ep004.wikispaces.com


3. Use the recommended references page at the end of our Unit Outline and label the parts a reference (e.g. author etc)

4. Search for an article in EBSCO. Use any topic you like or try this one: Indigenous higher education. Choose any article/s

a] Practise writing the end text reference and then label the parts (author etc)

b] Identify the parts and types of information in the article/s that are useful when evaluating.

5. Review searching the different library sources (catalogue etc). You can use old search terms from the EP003 essays or make up your own.

6. Get to know how to find things in the “referencing guide”.

ASSESSMENT TWO - PREP NOTES AND INFORMATION


EP004 - ASSESSMENT   TWO PREPARATION
WHEN:     WEEK 8
TIME: FIRST 1 ½ HOURS OF YOUR USUAL CLASS 
VENUE: USUAL CLASS VENUE
TYPE OF ASSESSMENT: Short answer / written – COMPUTERS will be used.
-       You will need to:
o  Complete some theoretical questions on what we have covered since lecture 4
o  Conduct /refine a variety of searches through the Library page
o  Identify referencing information from your searches
o  Use your “Referencing Guide”

WHAT TO BRING for the assessment:

·      Referencing Guide (you can bring an unmarked paper version or access it from the Library page).
·      Pencil / pen
·      Highlighter
·      Eraser or whiteout

STUDY PREPARATION:

·      Assessment is based on work in Lectures 1-7
·      Homework tasks review the content covered
·      Review tasks at the end of lectures review the content covered
·      Study tasks on the Blog uploaded Sept 8th review the content and on blackboard

BE PUNCTUAL

EP004 - Study Tasks for Assessment Two

Please note:  The tasks are design for you to develop background knowledge and to practice skills. You will need to show your understanding and APPLY what you have learnt to different situations. These are not practise tasks for every question – it is only a guide. YOU NEED TO ORGANISE YOUR OWN REVIEW OF WORK TOO.

1.    Get your copy of the EP003 essay you handed in. Mark your own in text referencing by referring to your Reference Guide. Read the explanations and examples in your guide carefully. (if you don’t have a copy then write a direct quote from an article you have search and use in-text referencing)
2.    Analyse this topic question:

In the last 20 years, rates of divorce have risen significantly in Western countries. Critically analyse some of the different explanations given for this phenomenon.

3.    What are the most relevant databases you would use for the following topics:
a.    Stress and heart disease.
b.    Advertising and business development
c.     Television and student concentration in classrooms.
4.    What is the quickest way you can find the databases you want.
5.    Search any of the topics above and choose the most relevant article.
a.    How did you do this?
b.    Why is the article you chose relevant?
c.     Can you refine your searches?
6.    Use the Reference guide to practice end text referencing using the above articles, then mark you own using the reference guide.
7.    Search for ebooks using the topics above. How do you choose the most relevant ebook?
8.    Practise writing the end text references using the above ebooks you found.
9.    What is a paraphrase?
10.    Make a checklist that will help you paraphrase effectively.

EP004 - Study Tasks for Assessment One

1.   List all the places/sources we have looked for information in activities (including “The amazing Race”) for Lectures 1 -3.

2.   Analyse these topics: (Identify the 3 parts of the topic)
a.    Explain how study skills can help students achieve in Higher Education.
b.   “All live meat export should be banned”. Do you agree with this statement? Provide evidence to support your argument.
c.    Analyse the arguments provided by political parties on carbon taxes in Australia.

3.   Find alternative keywords for “media” and make note of the strategies you used.

4.   Make yourself a checklist to evaluate a website and test it on the following websites:


Which one would is more reputable?

5.   Revise your answer for “The Relationship Between Information Literacy and The Research Cycle” by going through the slides on the blog. What can you add to your answer?

6.   Review the homework slides on the blog and your notes to make a list of points that show the important parts of each step of the research cycle and how they can help you.
